Geeking Out at the Argentina Comic-Con

This weekend marks our seven-year anniversary of living in Argentina—but we celebrated a couple of weeks early with a trip back home to New York!

Ha! Just kidding.

We actually traveled to Buenos Aires to experience our very first Argentina Comic-Con. A few years ago, we attended a Comic-Con-style event in Córdoba Province, but it really didn’t compare to the real Comic-Cons we’d experienced back in the States. So, going into this one, we weren’t sure if it was going to be another letdown.

Either way, we decided to find out for ourselves. So, we bought our tickets and invited an acquaintance to join us.

Once our plane landed, we dropped off our luggage at the hotel and took a cab straight to the Argentina Comic-Con. When we arrived, we noticed the line wrapped around the block. Luckily, once the gates opened, we were able to get in pretty quickly.

As it turns out, the Argentina Comic-Con was pretty big!

Here's a short clip I shot

Networks like AMC and the WB were promoting their shows in some pretty cool ways. Yes, I know the WB Network fizzled out in the early 2000s and eventually became the CW. But here in Argentina, the WB is still going strong and home to popular shows like Riverdale.

There were a couple of interactive events, like one where we got to run and kick as part of a promo for Godzilla 2.

There was also a room dedicated to the Annabelle sequel, which was pretty cool. However, the long line and wait? Not so much.

Of course, one of the highlights for us was taking photos with the cosplayers at the event.

And then we shopped... a lot!

There were vendors selling all kinds of goodies from franchises like Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, Alien, Harry Potter, anime, and more. I even found the original Castle Grayskull from He-Man and a She-Ra action figure. It was pretty pricey, so I didn’t buy it—but I later kicked myself for passing it up. We also found t-shirts and a ton of Funko Pops, so there was definitely something for everyone.

HOW MUCH WAS IT?
We spent about 500 Argentine pesos ($11.46 USD) per ticket. However, the price increases as the event date approaches. If you wait until the last minute, you might end up paying closer to 750 Argentine pesos ($17.19 USD). There’s also the option to buy VIP tickets, but I spoke with a couple who said they weren’t really worth it.

MISSED ONE? NO PROBLEM!

One cool thing about the Argentine Comic-Con is that it happens twice a year—once in May and again in December—unlike the one in New York, where you have to wait a whole year for the next event.

CELEBRITY GUESTS
The event also offers photo ops and autograph sessions, with prices ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 Argentine pesos ($45.85 USD to $91.71 USD) per special guest. This year, they had Chandler Riggs, aka Carl from The Walking Dead. I don’t have anything against the actor, but I’m not a fan of the show, so I skipped the photo op and autograph session. Last year, they had Jason David Frank from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Gillian Anderson from The X-Files. I would have definitely paid to meet both of them. If they bring in someone I want to see at the next Comic-Con, I’ll be sure to get the photo op!

WOULD I GO AGAIN?
Honestly, I can’t wait for the next Comic-Con! It’s a safe haven where people from all walks of life come together to celebrate their love for Sci-Fi, fantasy, television, and film. I love it! For more info on ticket pricing, you can check out their website—but fair warning, they typically don’t update it until about two months before the next event.
