This weekend marks our seven-year anniversary of living in Argentina. But we celebrated it a couple of weeks early by heading home to New York!
Ha Ha! Just kidding! We actually traveled to Buenos Aires to experience our first Argentina Comic-Con. Now we've attended a Comic-Con type event in Cordoba province a few years back. But it paled in comparison to the true Comic-Con we'd been to in the States. So we weren't sure if this was going to be another bust.
Either way, we decided to find out. So we bought our tickets and brought a very dear friend along.
Once our plane landed, we stopped by the hotel, left our luggage, and took a cab to the Argentina Comic-Con. But when we got there, we noticed the line coiled around the block. Fortunately, once the gates opened, we managed to get in pretty quickly.
As it turns out, the Argentina Comic-Con was pretty big!
Here's a short clip I shot
Networks like AMC and the WB were promoting their shows in cool ways. Yes, I know that the WB Network fizzled out in the early 2000s and that it eventually became the CW. But in Argentina, the WB is still alive and kicking and is home to a lot of popular shows like Riverdale.
There were a couple of interactive events like the one where we got to run and kick for a movie promo of Godzilla 2.
There was also a room dedicated to the Annabelle sequel, which was sort of cool. But the long line and long wait was awful.
Of course, one of the things we enjoyed the most was taking photos with the cosplayers at the event. And then we shopped... a lot!
There were vendors selling all kinds of stuff from genres like Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, Alien, Harry Potter, anime, and so much more. I even found the original Castle Grayskull from He-Man and a She-Ra action figure. It was really pricey though, so I didn't buy it. I later kicked myself for not doing that. We also found t-shirts and a ton of Funko Pops, too. So there's something for everyone here.
HOW MUCH WAS IT?
We spent about $500 Argentine pesos ($11.46 USD) per ticket. But they raise the price as the event date gets closer. So you could wind up paying closer to $750 Argentine pesos ($17.19 USD) if you wait until the last minute to buy your tickets. You can also spend more on the VIP ticket. But I spoke with a couple who said they weren't worth it.
MISSED ONE? NO PROBLEM!
The cool thing about the Argentine Comic-Con is that you can go in May and in December, unlike the one in New York where you had to wait a whole year for the next event.
CELEBRITY GUESTS
The event also offers photo ops and autograph sessions which are in the range of about $2,000 to $4,000 Argentine pesos ($45.85 USD and $91.71 USD) each per special celebrity guest. This year they had Chandler Riggs, aka Carl from The Walking Dead. I have nothing against the actor himself, but I'm not a fan of the show. So, I opted not to get the photo op or the autograph session. Last year, they had Jason David Frank from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Gillian Anderson from The X-Files. I would have definitely coughed up money for both of these actors. And if they have someone I'd like to see at the next Comic-Con, I will pay to see them.
WOULD I GO AGAIN?
Honestly, I can't wait for the next Comic-Con! It's a safe haven where people of all walks of life come together to celebrate their love for Sci-Fi, fantasy, television and films. And I love it! You can actually get more info on ticket pricing here. But fair warning: they don't usually update their site until about two months before the next event.
